What a beautiful evening this was! Lady Jane Willoughby Wordsmith came up trumps in her DRESS, (never normally attired you understand) and over thirty ladies in fabulous garden party purple, Tilly Tardy could have been going to a wedding, so smart was she. We supped fizz and ate canapes under the marquee and had a welcome and hat judging by Nick Hamilton himself. I was a bit embarrassed to win but it was only because of the huge stalk of purple blooms borrowed from Upptown Girl the week before which he could see easily in the crowd. Had he looked closer he would have spotted much more creative and thoughtful designs like Femme Fleur’s garden party number complete with bunting and brown paper plant labels, but he didn’t, so I won a plant!
Then we set off to see the gardens, loving the blooms, inspired by the plants, oohing and the arches, reminiscing about the bits we remember from the telly when it was Nick’s Dad at the helm and Gardener’s world came to Rutland every week. Lady Jane had written a quiz which kept us busy rooting about in the gardens for answers while lady Jane sat on a Lutyens bench and watched us.
A lovely time, and as promised by Jane, the sun shone.
